Kind-hearted members of Chavey Down's Women's Institute have helped secure a life-saving device for the community.
The team has installed a defibrillator to the wall outside popular pub the Newtown Pippin, on Ralphs Ride.
This crucial piece of emergency medical equipment was organised by committee member Angela, a spokeswoman for the society said.
With the support of the Institute and local pub, The Newtown Pippin, the device is now accessible to the public.
The initiative came to light after members attended a basic first aid presentation by the Red Cross.
During this session, they learned of a rising number of heart emergencies affecting people of different ages - a sobering revelation illustrating the importance of fast access to a defibrillator.
Seeing an urgent need, the Institute decided to acquire one for the area surrounding The Square in Harmans Water.
This bustling neighbourhood, filled with homes, shops, churches and the library, lacked a publicly accessible defibrillator.
The Institute, following some research, approached the British Heart Foundation and successfully applied for one of the fully funded defibrillator packages given to communities each year.
The members also gained the support of Vicki and Simon, the landlords of The Newtown Pippin pub, according to a press release by Chavey Down WI.
They were pleased to host the unit on the external wall of their pub.
Notably, the defibrillator is available to the public 24/7 and is registered with The Circuit.
This inclusion ensures that emergency services can swiftly direct anyone in need to the closest available device.
Local MP Peter Swallow has also praised the new addition, evidencing the wider acknowledgment of the Women's Institute's achievement.
This effort reflects the altruistic attitude of Chavey Down WI, which relocated over a year ago to Harmans Water from its original home in Chavey Down.
They currently meet at St. Paul's Church Hall in The Square, every third Monday of the month at 7.45pm.
The Chavey Down WI membership is open for anyone above the age of 16.
The institute invites everyone to join and enjoy a diverse range of speakers, craft meetings and outings.
To get involved or find out more, contact the secretary, Margo, at 07786 116802, or visit the Institute's Facebook page or website.
This collective effort underscores the significant role of community activities in improving and safeguarding local residents' health.
With further endeavours on the horizon, Chavey Down Women's Institute continues to play an integral part in enhancing the neighbourhood's overall welfare.
