It’s Friday 13th and for many, the day is associated with bad luck and dark omens. All too familiar with that superstition are domestic black cats.
Black cats have long been the subject of superstition and are a known familiar to magical beings, including witches in mythical folklore.
Despite their glossy coats and often affectionate personalities their association with bad luck often makes them difficult to rehome from animal rescue centres.
To mark Friday 13th, we hope to put a positive spin on the black cats and kittens listed for rehoming in the RSPCA in East Berkshire and Cats Protection Berkshire in Newbury.
Here are the adorable felines looking for their forever homes with local families or individuals unafraid of a little superstition.
Tommy
Age: 5 years old approx
Breed: Domestic short hair
Gender: Male
Tommy was abandoned by his owners and spent most of his time roaming outdoors looking for food, company and shelter, which was offered by people in his neighbourhood for quite some time.
According to the RSPCA, he is a friendly cat who likes to be consoled with affection, strokes and loves his food.
Although seeming a little unsure at times due to the uncertainty he has experienced, he still enjoys company and love.
The RSPCA said: "Tommy is also prone to be a roaming cat that loves the outdoors, so it is advised to keep Tommy at home in a calm loving environment as the only cat at home, before being introduced to a safe outdoor space."
Victoria and Sydney
Age: 2 months
Gender: Female
Breed: Black
This brother and sister duo are described a 'Double trouble' (but in a good way). Victoria and Sydney are confident, playful kittens that love to chase one another for rough and tumbles.
In their quiet moments, they are gorgeous to cuddle, stroke and tickle. They love shoe laces, so don't expect to get far with these two bundles. They are looking for a home together.
Winnie and Wanda
Age: 5 Months
Breed: Domestic Short haired
Gender: Female
Winnie and Wanda are two 5-month-old kittens looking for their new home together. Both are playful when either playing together, independently or with fishing rod.
Cat Protection said: "They love to play with their toys and their fabric tunnel. The girls are sweet natured, relaxed kittens once they’ve settled into their environment."
Wanda is very sweet and will happily smother you with affectionate head rubs and loud purrs. She's happy to be picked up and cuddled and is happy to sit on your lap but is far too busy giving you head rubs to properly settle down!
Winnie is a very friendly young lady, but can be cautious at first - however, if you sit near her, Winnie will happily play with you. She gets very excited when offered a fishing rod toy and will tear around the room chasing after it. If you just want to read or watch TV, she’ll happily entertain herself with a tiny toy mouse or play rough-and-tumble with her sister.
She is described as incredibly sweet natured so, given time to settle in and relax into her new home and family, there's no doubt she will become just as affectionate and outgoing as her twin sister.
