ONE of Berkshire's most popular spas will grow its own produce after plans to spruce up its garden area were approved.
Nirvana Spa on Mole Road, Sindlesham, will replace its greenhouse after the current fell into ‘poor condition’.
Wokingham Borough Council approved the change to the Grade II listed building, parts of which date back to the 17th century.
The new greenhouse, built in Victorian style, will be used for horticulture purposes. It will be the same size of the existing greenhouse but be slightly taller, by 0.9 metres.
As well as this, the existing garden wall, pump house and potting shed will be redeveloped after being neglected for some years. This will take the garden back into use for ‘growing vegetables for the main house’, according to Heritage Fusion.
Planning permission was sought with Wokingham Borough Council due to the site, West Court, being a Grade II listed building.
The former manor house dates back to the 17th century, and has undergone various works and extensions in 1800, 1835, 1901 and most recently in 1964.
Proposed designs for the new greenhouse show it would be built with low lying brickwork, glazed walls and a black powder coated aluminium frame.
This is replacing the current greenhouse which was described by Heritage Fusion as in ‘poor condition’.
Heritage Fusion, who designed the proposals, wrote: “This high-quality investment will ensure that the garden wall is maintained, ensuring its future survival.
“The new greenhouse proposed is of a high aesthetic quality, reflective of the status of the house and a positive contribution to the overall setting.”
The new greenhouse would not ‘excessively encroach or expand development away from the original building’, with management arguing it would ‘provide a higher quality overall appearance’ of the grounds.
After planning permission was given on October 1, it is not known when construction will begin.
It comes in the latest change to the spa destination, which won planning permission to expand into a hotel in 2020. The former Pulse8 gym, next door to the spa, is being demolished and replaced with a 72-bed hotel.
Plans include a 33-metre outdoor pool and patio, along with a state-of-the-art gym inside the hotel. A further rooftop garden between 11am and 9pm is included in plans.
Food served at the spa includes tapas, breakfast, afternoon tea and an à la carte menu.
