Local councils have warned against ‘unscrupulous’ traders following the rise in adverse weather conditions.
It comes as last month was the wettest September for Berkshire in nearly 200 years, which may cause many homes or businesses to need repairs.
The Public Protection Partnership (PPP), which joins together Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire and Wokingham, are warning residents and businesses about the rise as we head into wet weather season.
The PPP says that ‘unscrupulous’ traders and ‘cold callers offering building repairs, garden work and clean-up services’ may be ‘sub-standard and overpriced’.
It comes as many ‘reputable’ traders may already be booked up due to the adverse weather.
Councillor Iskandar Jefferies, Chairman of the Joint Public Protection Committee said: “People who have been affected are often very tempted to take the first offer to restore their property as quickly as possible. You should never agree to have work done by someone who appears at your door unannounced.”
Traders pose as ‘legitimate trades people’ and often target elderly and vulnerable members of the community.
Cllr Jefferies said that the offenders area ‘extremely believable’ but can use ‘aggressive behaviour and scare tactics’.
The PPP says that those looking to get repairs done should prepare a detailed description of the works needed.
They should also get at least three written quotes and ask to see proof of a trader’s insurance.
Social media reviews are also to be treated with caution as they may not be genuine.
Residents are also advised to never pay in case and use a secure method such as bank transfer or credit card.
