A man has sadly died after allegedly falling from a tower at a stately manor in the Bracknell area that is owned by the Sultan of Brunei.

The man, aged 59, died suddenly at Binfield Manor, which is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1754.

The incident was reported anonymously to the media by someone aware of the occurrence.

A police spokesperson said: "Thames Valley Police received a report of a sudden death in Binfield at around 2.25pm on Tuesday, October 15.

"A 59-year-old-man sadly died at the scene and an investigation is ongoing.

"His next of kin have been made aware and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

According to public information, the house was built in 1754 as a country retreat for William Pitt The Elder.

It is currently owned by Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz'zaddin Wad'daulah, the Sultan of Brunei.

The person who anonymously reported the incident referred to health and safety concerns relating to construction work on the manor.

Susan Halliwell, the chief executive of Bracknell Forest Council, said:“We are saddened to hear about the incident that occurred at Binfield Manor and our condolences go out to the family and those affected.

“As the incident took place on private land, the council has no power to investigate. This is a matter for the Health and Safety Executive and other relevant authorities like the police. We will support these authorities with any investigation if requested.

“If residents have concerns regarding construction safety or regulations, they should contact the HSE directly.”

The HSE has been asked whether it has begun an investigation into the incident.

Binfield Manor is not to be confused with Binfield House, located a mile away off Terrace Road North, which is undergoing conversion into nine retirement apartments.
