DANNY Willett will enjoy a glorious homecoming when he makes his first appearance on UK soil since winning the Masters when he tees it up in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club next month (May 26-29).

The 28-year-old Englishman claimed his first Major title at Augusta National, closing out a three-stroke victory in impressively swashbuckling fashion after taking the lead with three holes to play, birdieing the 16th before parring his way home to secure the Green Jacket.

That new item in his wardrobe will accompany him to Surrey, where the 100,000-plus spectators will be eager to offer their congratulations on becoming the first European Masters champion since 1999, and the first English winner since Nick Faldo in 1996.

“I’m looking forward to playing in the BMW PGA Championship and taking the Green Jacket down to Wentworth,” said Willett, who is currently enjoying some well-deserved time off with his wife, Nicole, and baby son, Zachariah, born 12 days before his father’s wonderful win.

“It’s a special week and the atmosphere is brilliant with every hole lined with fans.

"It’s always nice to compete in your home country, and I can’t wait to play in front of the home supporters and hopefully give them something to cheer about.”

Willett won his first European Tour title at the BMW International Open in 2012, before adding two more last season in South Africa and Switzerland to push Rory McIlroy all the way in the Race to Dubai, ultimately finishing second.

He has continued in the same vein in 2016, claiming the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January before an impressive third-place finish in the first WGC event of the season in March hinted at what was to come at Augusta National.

The Yorkshireman added: “BMW always put on great golf tournaments, and, as a player, you’re always looked after very well.

“It would be nice if I could add to my BMW trophy collection after making my European Tour breakthrough in the BMW International Open a few years back.

“After a couple of weeks’ rest I’m going to pick up where I left off, trying to improve each and every day. You can’t beat that feeling of winning and I want to give myself the chance of doing that as often as I can.”

Joining Willett in a star-studded field at Wentworth are Matthew Fitzpatrick, Søren Kjeldsen, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood, all of whom finished in the top ten at the season’s first Major Championship.

Westwood, who was tied second at Augusta National, has come close to winning the BMW PGA Championship on several occasions, finishing in the top ten in 2013, 2011, 2000 and 1997.
