BRACKNELL Forest were the most successful area in the Berkshire county under-13 championships held at Palmer Park, Reading, writes Dave Wright.
The girls accrued 64 points last Thursday to hold off the challenge of Windsor & Maidenhead by two points with Wokingham a close up third.
The two finished a mile clear of the rest, with Reading finishing fourth on just 17 points, with West Berkshire just behind on 16 points with Slough sixth on 14.
Bracknell’s winners included Kitty Mair, who led the field home in the 600 metres in a time of 1min 42.9m, just two-fifths of a second outside the championship record.
In the boys’ competition, Bracknell finished runners-up with 50 points, four fewer than winners West Berks.
Slough were third on 33 points, followed by Reading with 31 and Windsor & Maidenhead with 20.
l THE Holt will have the biggest representation in the Berkshire girls team at the English School athletic championships taking place in Birmingham this weekend.
They provide six of the 38-strong squad with Alex Barbour competing in the senior 1,500m steeplechase, Pheobe Fenwick (senior 400m), Emily Macdonald (senior pole vault), Isabella Gilkes (intermediate 200m), Connie McCafferty (intermediate 300m) and Chole Eames (junior 75m hurdles).
The boys’ squad of 31 includes Forest’s junior pole vaulter Toby Irving, junior javelin throwers Jonah McCafferty and Louie Holzman, as well as Josh Zeller, who goes in the intermediate 100m hurdles.
With a total of 69, it is by far the largest team Berkshire have ever taken to the national championships.
l THE Piggott completed a double at the Reading Schools Under-14 Athletics League, winning both the girls’ and boys’ A finals.
The girls from Wargrave totalled 54 points to finish six points clear of Maiden Erlegh A, while the boys won even more comfortably, accumulating 58 points, with Blue Coat runners-up on 49.5.
Forest Boys A were the impressive winners of the B final with 78 points, a whopping 26 points ahead of Highdown in second place.
The girls’ B final went to The Abbey with 61 points, 15 ahead of nearest challengers Denefield.
In the C competition, the victors were Prospect boys and the girls from Kennet, while Park House and John Madejski Academy were the respective winners in the D league.
