CAM McDonald scored a sensational double hat-trick as Bracknell RFC picked up their first South West Premier win of the season by crushing Old Patesians 52-12 at Lily Hill Park.
The home side opened the scoring within two minutes as wing McDonald crossed the whitewash and he grabbed a second with an interception which Vic Hardwicke converted to make the score 12-0.
McDonald completed his hat-trick on the half-hour mark, although Old Pats gave themselves a lifeline when full back Lee Hathaway scored an intercept try of his own to cut the gap to 19-5 at half-time.
The Lily Hill men came out with a bang and secured their try bonus-point when Michael Clarke burst over, and Hardwicke then off-loaded to McDonald to score before adding the conversion to extend the lead to 31-5.
With 10 minutes remaining, McDonald continued his tour de force by taking a pass from Connor Segre to go over for his fifth, before Kim Plant barrelled over for his side’s next try.
McDonald completed an amazing display by rounding off his double hat-trick with a sensational score, collecting his own kick to dot down.
The visitors had the final word as scrum-half Tom Knight went over for a late converted try, but this was McDonald’s day.
Bracknell Director of Rugby Jamie Turner was not getting ahead of himself after the victory, stating: “Our set piece worked well and we displayed good hands at certain times, but we are still a work in progress.”
Bracknell travel to Barnstaple this coming Saturday (2.30pm).
