By Mary Temperton
Leader of Bracknell Forest Council
Hello to residents across Bracknell Forest,
Like many of you, I have been upset and saddened at the scenes of unrest across the country. I want to assure residents that we are supporting the police and other partners with their work to ensure our Muslim and other minority communities remain safe and supported at this troubling time.
I am proud of the high levels of community cohesion we demonstrate in Bracknell Forest. People from a diverse range of cultures contribute to and live in harmony together across our borough.
Over the past week, our teams have been reaching out to our Muslim, Black and Asian communities to provide support and reassurance. Everyone has a right to feel safe in their homes and in their community. No one should ever feel targeted or singled out.
You may have seen the statement Thames Valley Police issued recently. I would echo their advice and encourage you to report any information regarding planned disorder to them immediately. You can do this via their website.
If you prefer to report anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or report via their online form. In an emergency, do of course dial 999.
Any incidences of hate crime, whether to you or someone else, should be reported to the police. Hate crime includes name-calling, whether online or face-to-face and can escalate into more serious incidences. Please don’t be afraid to speak up and report something if it doesn’t seem right.
In other recent news, you may have seen that government has announced changes to the winter fuel allowance eligibility. From this winter, pensioners who qualify for pension credit, and a small number of other means tested benefits, will be eligible. We know this may be a worry for many.
To check if you qualify for pension credit, visit the pension credit calculator. For those who struggle with accessing the internet, support is available from our excellent partners at Citizens Advice and Age Concern. Teams across the council can also help.
It is estimated that over 800,000 pensioners in the UK who are eligible miss out, so we are keen to spread the message. If you think you may be eligible, please do reach out for support.
I wish you a pleasant and peaceful week ahead.
