In this column, Martyn Osment, a neighbour and reader, has expressed deep concern over the possible conversion of a family golfing site on the outskirts of Bracknell into a graveyard. Mr Osment writes:

I am writing to express my deep concern over the proposal to convert the Pitch and Putt course at Downshire into a cemetery. This course is a vital resource for the local community, catering to both younger and older generations, and its loss would be a significant blow to the recreational options in our area.

The Pitch and Putt is a starting ground for many young people to learn golf in a relaxed and accessible environment. It provides them with the chance to engage in a sport that fosters both physical and mental well-being. For older generations, it is a cherished place to practice and stay active. During school holidays, the course is packed with families and children, making it a hub of activity and community engagement.

If Bracknell Forest Council is so desperate for cemetery expansion, it is worth questioning why they sold the land on the other side of the crematorium for the housing development The Evergreens. Surely, this could have been a more suitable option for expansion rather than sacrificing a community asset that brings so much joy and value to the people of our area.

I urge the council to reconsider this decision and explore alternative locations for the cemetery that do not come at the cost of our cherished recreational spaces.
